When Will I Look Normal After Blepharoplasty?
One of the most common questions from patients considering blepharoplasty is how long it takes to look presentable again. While individual healing varies, the following timeline reflects what most patients can expect.
Week 1: The Most Visible Phase
Swelling and bruising are at their peak during the first three to five days. The eyelids may feel tight and heavy. Bruising can extend to the cheeks and may appear dark purple or blue. By the end of the first week, swelling begins to decrease noticeably, and sutures are typically removed between days five and seven. Most patients do not feel comfortable appearing in public during this period.
Week 2: A Turning Point
The second week marks a significant improvement. Bruising transitions from dark purple to yellow-green and becomes much easier to conceal. Swelling continues to diminish, though it may be more noticeable in the mornings. Most patients feel confident enough to return to work and social activities. Light, mineral-based makeup can usually be applied over the incision sites from around day 10 to 14, once the surgeon confirms adequate healing.
Weeks 3 to 4: Approaching Normalcy
By the third and fourth weeks, the majority of visible recovery signs have resolved. Residual swelling is subtle and generally noticeable only to the patient. The incision lines may still appear slightly pink. Most activities, including moderate exercise, can be resumed. Makeup can be worn freely.
Months 2 to 3: Scar Fading
The incision scars continue to mature and fade over the second and third months. In upper blepharoplasty, the scar settles into the eyelid crease and becomes nearly invisible. In lower blepharoplasty with an external approach, the sub-lash incision similarly fades to a fine, inconspicuous line. Sun protection remains important during this period to prevent hyperpigmentation of the healing scar.
Month 6 and Beyond: The Final Result
The definitive outcome is typically apparent by six months. All swelling has resolved, the scars have fully matured, and the eyelids have achieved their final shape and position. Patients generally report that the result looks entirely natural and that others cannot tell surgery was performed.
Sun Exposure and Makeup Guidelines
- Avoid direct sun exposure on healing incisions for at least 3 months
- Wear sunglasses with UV protection whenever outdoors during recovery
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the periocular area once the skin has healed
- Resume eye makeup only after your surgeon confirms it is safe, typically at 10 to 14 days
- Use gentle, hypoallergenic products when reintroducing cosmetics
