Pre-Operative Preparation

Proper preparation before eyelid surgery helps ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery. This page covers pre-operative tests, medication adjustments, surgery day preparation, and important points to keep in mind.

Pre-Operative Tests

To assess your fitness for surgery, certain tests are ordered typically 1-2 weeks before the procedure:

  • Blood tests: Complete blood count (CBC), liver and kidney function tests, fasting blood glucose.
  • Coagulation tests: PT, aPTT, INR. These are particularly important for patients taking blood-thinning medications.
  • ECG (if indicated): An electrocardiogram may be requested depending on your age and general health. The anesthesia team will advise accordingly.

Test results are reviewed by Op. Dr. Burak Akbay and the anesthesia team. If any abnormalities are detected, necessary adjustments are made before surgery.

Medication Adjustments

Certain medications may need to be paused or adjusted before surgery. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions:

  • Blood thinners: Aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel, and similar anticoagulants may need to be stopped a specified number of days before surgery. The exact timing depends on the medication and is determined by your doctor.
  • Herbal supplements: Ginkgo biloba, garlic extracts, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E can increase bleeding risk. These should be discontinued at least 1 week before surgery.
  • Regular medications: Inform your doctor about all medications for chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or thyroid disorders. Most can be taken on the morning of surgery with a small sip of water, but your doctor will confirm.

Do not stop or change the dose of any medication without consulting your doctor first.

Surgery Day

On the day of surgery, the following preparations will help ensure a smooth process:

  • No makeup: Your face and eye area should be free of makeup, creams, or lotions. Clean skin facilitates surgical sterilization.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Choose a front-opening (button or zip) top rather than a pullover. This makes changing easier after surgery.
  • Bring a companion: You should not drive yourself home after surgery. Have someone available to accompany you.
  • Eating and drinking: For local anesthesia, a light breakfast is usually permitted. If sedation or general anesthesia is planned, you must fast for at least 6-8 hours before the procedure. Your doctor will provide specific instructions.

What to Bring

Please bring the following items on your surgery day:

  • Identification: Passport or national ID for hospital registration.
  • Test results: Pre-operative blood tests and other reports (digital or printed).
  • Medications: Bring your regular medications (you may need them after surgery).
  • Sunglasses: Useful for protecting your eyes from sunlight and covering post-operative swelling and bruising.

Important Precautions

In the days before surgery, you can take several steps to support optimal healing:

  • Smoking: Smoking impairs blood circulation and slows wound healing. It is recommended to stop or reduce smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can increase bleeding risk. Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 1 week before surgery.
  • Sleep: Ensure you get adequate, restful sleep in the nights leading up to surgery. A well-rested body supports the healing process.
  • Questions: Ask all your questions about the procedure beforehand. Do not hesitate to share any concerns. Being well-informed helps reduce anxiety.
